Zirconium Metal Plate
Overview
Zirconium metal plates are high-performance products made from zirconium and zirconium alloys, possessing excellent corrosion resistance, mechanical properties, high-temperature resistance, and biocompatibility. Due to their low neutron absorption cross-section and radiation resistance, they are widely used in the nuclear industry and also have important applications in chemical engineering, aerospace, and medical devices. We can provide standard and custom-sized metal fabricated parts. If you have any needs, please feel free to contact us via email or WhatsApp.
Zirconium Characteristic
- Exceptional corrosion resistance: Zirconium spontaneously forms a dense, stable zirconium dioxide layer in air or aqueous solutions, maintaining its shape under strong acids, strong alkalis, and high-temperature/high-pressure conditions.
- Outstanding nuclear properties: Pure zirconium exhibits an extremely low neutron absorption cross-section. As a nuclear reactor coolant, it releases no harmful substances, making it the preferred material for nuclear fuel cladding.
- Excellent mechanical properties: High tensile strength with superior plasticity compared to high-strength steel, enabling fabrication through processes like bending and stamping.
- High melting point, relatively high thermal conductivity, and low thermal expansion coefficient minimize equipment deformation caused by thermal expansion and contraction.
- Excellent biocompatibility: Certain zirconium alloys (e.g., zirconium-niobium alloys) exhibit no rejection reaction with human bone or soft tissue and do not leach harmful metal ions.

Zirconium Metal Plate Application
- Chemical Industry: Zirconium plates are commonly used in the manufacture of reactors, heat exchangers, evaporators, storage tanks, and piping systems, especially suitable for handling highly corrosive media such as hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, nitric acid, and strong alkalis.
- Nuclear Energy Industry: Zirconium sheets are used as cladding materials for nuclear fuel and structural materials for reactor cores, ensuring the safe operation of nuclear power plants for extended periods.
- Aerospace: Used in the manufacture of high-temperature components such as combustion chambers and turbine blades for aircraft engines, as well as airframes and landing gear for high-performance aircraft or spacecraft, providing both high strength and stability in harsh high-altitude environments.
- Medical Devices: Zirconium products have good biocompatibility and wear resistance, effectively mimicking the mechanical properties of human bones, and are frequently used in the manufacture of orthopedic implants (such as artificial joints, bone plates, and bone screws) and dental prostheses.
- Marine Engineering: Used in the manufacture of pressure hulls for deep-sea exploration equipment, providing resistance to chloride ion corrosion from seawater and ensuring the accuracy and stability of the equipment.
Processing
① Melting: High-purity zirconium material is used to produce high-quality ingots through vacuum arc remelting (VAR) or electron beam melting (EBM) technology.
② Forging: Multi-pass forging is performed using a hydraulic press to transform the as-cast structure into a forged structure, improving the overall properties of the metal.
③ Rolling: Multi-pass hot rolling is performed to the target thickness, breaking down coarse grains; the hot-rolled slabs are then rolled to the final thickness, improving the dimensional accuracy and surface quality of the plates; recrystallization annealing is required after every 2-3 passes of cold rolling.
④ Finishing: The plates are straightened and cut to size, ensuring surface flatness and removing edge burrs.
⑤ Surface Treatment: Pickling, passivation, and polishing treatments are performed to remove the oxide layer and reduce surface roughness.
⑥ Quality Inspection: Including mechanical property testing, dimensional accuracy testing, visual inspection, or non-destructive testing.
